About Dwarf Yaupon Holly

Dwarf Yaupon Holly (Ilex vomitoria ‘Nana’) is a compact evergreen shrub that typically grows 3-5 feet tall and wide, forming a dense, rounded mound. This miniature version of the native Yaupon Holly features small, oval-shaped, glossy dark green leaves that create a fine texture in the landscape. Unlike its larger relative, the Dwarf Yaupon maintains its neat, compact habit with minimal intervention. Its tight branching structure makes it an excellent choice for low hedges, foundation plantings, borders, or as a specimen plant in smaller gardens. In late fall, female plants produce small red berries that persist through winter, adding seasonal interest and attracting birds. Extremely versatile and adaptable, this native shrub thrives in various landscape settings while maintaining its appealing dense form.

Maintenance Requirements

Dwarf Yaupon Holly is prized for its easy-care nature. Once established, it has moderate water needs, requiring supplemental irrigation only during prolonged dry spells. It performs best in full sun to partial shade conditions, with more sun typically producing a denser growth habit. Regarding soil, it demonstrates remarkable adaptability, thriving in everything from sandy to clay soils, and tolerating both acidic and slightly alkaline conditions. While naturally compact, occasional light pruning in late winter or early spring can maintain its desired shape and size. Shearing is possible for formal hedges but isn’t necessary for its natural attractive form. This holly shows excellent resistance to most pests and diseases, and deer typically avoid browsing it, making it virtually problem-free for most landscapes.
