Purpose and sod-type links
This page is the universal baseline for caring for any new sod installation.
Year-round care varies by sod type. For sod-type-specific instructions, use these pages:
Definitions and notice timing rules used across our policies are available at policies. We do not restate them here.
Your responsibilities after installation
- Watering and care are the homeowner’s responsibility after installation.
- A working irrigation method is required (sprinkler system or consistent manual watering).
- If irrigation is not functioning, it must be addressed immediately to avoid sod failure.
If irrigation problems are discovered, repair responsibility depends on whether the issue is project-caused or pre-existing. See Damage, Risk & Liability Policy. If additional work is needed, it may require a change order: Change Orders & Scope Policy.
First 48 hours (inspection and photo reporting)
Within the first 48 hours, inspect your new sod for visible installation issues like:
- Gaps between pieces
- Large dead areas
- Pieces that are badly shifted or do not make soil contact
If you see anything concerning, report it within 48 hours with photos. This aligns with our sod installation check window. See Warranties Policy for the full sod terms and claim process.
First 30 days (establishment basics)
The first 30 days are the establishment window. “Establishing” means:
- Roots take hold in the soil
- Seams tighten over time
- Some color variation can be normal early on
Warranty coverage depends on following care instructions and reporting issues with photos within the required windows. For full warranty terms, see our Service Warranty Overview page.
Watering principles (no guesswork schedules)
We do not post a one-size-fits-all watering calendar on this baseline page because conditions vary by yard.
Use these principles during establishment:
- Keep the sod consistently moist during the early phase.
- Avoid letting the sod dry out, especially in hot, windy, or full-sun conditions.
- Avoid pooling/standing water from overwatering.
- Adjust for heat, wind, sun exposure, and soil type (including heavy clay behavior).
If you want a numeric watering schedule, we can provide one, but we will not guess it here:
TODO[CONFIRM: Provide our standard watering schedule for the first 14 days and days 15–30 so we don’t guess.]
Mowing timing and traffic limits
Mowing: Do not mow until the sod is rooted enough to resist lifting.
- Use a simple “tug test”: gently lift a corner. If it lifts easily, wait longer.
Traffic: Keep foot traffic and pets to a minimum during the establishment. Heavy use and pet damage can prevent rooting and may void coverage (see warranty exclusions).
Sun, shade, and realistic expectations
- Shade matters: Poor sunlight or dense shade can limit sod performance.
- Early appearance: Some seams may be visible early, and color may vary as sod establishes.
If anything looks concerning, report it promptly with photos.
What can void coverage (common causes of failure)
Common causes of sod failure that can void coverage include:
- Underwatering or no irrigation
- Overwatering that leads to washout or disease risk (general)
- Pet damage, heavy traffic, or kids
- Poor sunlight/shade limitations
- Chemical damage (herbicides/fertilizers) not used per guidance
- Extreme weather/acts of nature
- Third-party work or modifications after installation (sprinkler work, grading changes, etc.)
For full warranty terms, see Warranties Policy.
How to report concerns with photos
If you have a concern, send photos and a short description as soon as possible.
- Take wide photos (show the area) and close-up photos (show the detail).
- Include the date/time when possible.
- Note the location (front/back/side; near driveway, fence, etc.).
- Send via text or email.
For notice timing rules, see /policies/. Written notices sent outside business hours are treated as received at 8:00 AM CT on the next business day. Please confirm receipt.
