Watering New Zoysia Sod
During the first 2-3 weeks, water your new Zoysia lawn daily for about 30 minutes per zone, ideally before 9 AM to maximize absorption and reduce evaporation. During peak heat from July 15 to September 15, water twice daily, morning and evening, if temperatures are especially high and rainfall is scarce.
After the lawn resists a gentle tug, usually after 2-3 weeks, reduce watering to once per week. Each session should provide a deep soak of about 1-1.5 inches of water per week, including rainfall. During hotter months from mid-July to mid-September, watering duration may need to increase up to 40 minutes per zone to maintain soil moisture.
Fertilizing Schedule
Wait until new Zoysia sod is well-established before applying fertilizer, typically 6-8 weeks after installation or after the lawn has been mowed 2-3 times. Fertilizing too soon can damage young roots and hinder establishment.
- Late spring, April to May: Apply the first slow-release, balanced fertilizer after the grass greens up.
- Mid-summer, July to August: Apply a second fertilizer application, but avoid fertilizing during extreme heat waves.
- Early fall, September: An optional third application can focus on lower nitrogen and higher potassium to prepare for dormancy.
- Late fall through winter, November to February: Do not fertilize while Zoysia is dormant.
Weed Control Timing
Weeds can appear because herbicide applied before sod installation reduces existing weeds, but some seeds may remain in the soil. Wind, birds, pets, and neighboring lawns can introduce new weed seeds, especially in bare or thin spots. Weeds often emerge where the new grass is slow to fill in, particularly in sunny spots.
Wait until your Zoysia lawn is well-established and has been mowed 3-4 times, usually 60-90 days after installation, before applying any herbicide. Applying chemicals too soon can damage young roots and slow establishment. Avoid pre-emergent herbicides during the first growing season.
Hand-pull weeds where practical, especially large or isolated ones. Mow regularly at the recommended height, and water and fertilize properly, to encourage Zoysia to thicken and fill bare spots quickly.
After the waiting period, use selective post-emergent herbicides labeled safe for Zoysia, such as products containing 2,4-D, MCPP, or Dicamba. Always read and follow the product label and confirm compatibility with your grass type. Never use non-selective herbicides, such as Roundup or glyphosate, on your lawn because they kill both grass and weeds.
To help prevent future weeds, maintain a thick, healthy lawn through proper watering, mowing, and fertilization. Patch or overseed bare spots to prevent weeds from taking hold.
Mowing Height and First Cut
Wait 21-28 days after installation, or until the sod is well-rooted, before the first mow. Test by gently tugging the sod; if it resists, roots are established. For the first mow, trim only the top portion of the grass and do not lower the mower below 2 inches. Remove no more than one-third of the grass blade at a time.
In hot, dry weather of 100°F or higher, maintain Zoysia at 2-2.5 inches, or up to 3 inches for some varieties or shaded areas. Letting the grass grow slightly higher than standard recommendations helps retain moisture and protects roots from heat stress. Always use sharp mower blades and avoid mowing wet grass. For later mowings, gradually lower the mower height if desired, but never below 1.5 inches.
Seasonal Zoysia Care
- Spring, March to May: Increase watering frequency as temperatures rise to support new growth. Apply first fertilizer in late April or May after the lawn greens up. Apply pre-emergent herbicide only if the lawn is well-established and not in its first season. Resume regular mowing as growth accelerates.
- Summer, June to August: Increase watering duration or frequency during hot, dry spells. Apply the second fertilizer round in July or August, but avoid fertilizing during heat waves. Spot-treat summer weeds only after the lawn is established. Mow more frequently as growth picks up and maintain a higher height during extreme heat.
- Fall, September to November: Gradually reduce watering as temperatures cool, but do not let the soil dry out. Apply the optional third fertilizer application in early September. Treat late-emerging weeds as needed. Continue regular mowing and raise height slightly in late fall.
- Winter, December to February: Water minimally and only during extended dry periods. Do not fertilize during dormancy. Monitor and remove winter weeds as needed. Mowing is usually not required. Avoid heavy traffic on dormant grass.
Year-Round Zoysia Tips
- Lawn inspections: Regularly check for pests, diseases, and signs of stress.
- Aeration: Aerate in spring or early summer to relieve soil compaction and improve nutrient uptake.
- Thatch management: Dethatch if the thatch layer exceeds 1/2 inch because Zoysia can accumulate thatch over time.
