Description and Uses
The Rock Rose, scientifically known as Pavonia lasiopetala, is an attractive, deciduous sub-shrub well-suited for ornamental and ecological landscaping. This plant produces masses of showy pink flowers with yellow stamens, each about 2 inches wide, which bloom abundantly on new growth. The soft, velvety foliage is medium green and slightly toothed. Typically reaching a height of 2–4 feet and spreading 2–3 feet wide, Rock Rose forms a loose, rounded shape that works well in borders, cottage gardens, wildflower areas, or as a colorful accent in xeriscapes. Its strong drought tolerance and ability to attract pollinators make it a favorite in low-maintenance gardens.
Maintenance Guidelines
Rock Rose is an easy-care plant perfect for gardeners who want reliable blooms with little fuss. It grows best in full sun but can tolerate partial shade. Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant and only needs supplemental watering during prolonged dry spells. Well-draining soil is crucial—sandy or rocky soils are ideal. Prune lightly after flowering or as needed to maintain shape and promote bushier growth. Rock Rose has few pest or disease problems and generally does not require fertilization.
