Japanese Aralia (Fatsia japonica)

Japanese Aralia is a striking evergreen shrub that brings bold tropical flair to shaded landscapes. Growing 6-10 feet tall and wide, this architectural plant features large, glossy, hand-shaped leaves with 7-9 deep lobes that can reach 12-16 inches across. Its impressive foliage creates a dramatic statement, while small white flower clusters appear in late fall, followed by decorative black berries in winter. Bold tropical shade plant. Perfect for shaded patios and woodland gardens. Japanese Aralia works beautifully as a specimen plant, foundation planting, or container accent, thriving in areas where many other plants struggle. Its exotic appearance provides year-round interest and makes an excellent backdrop for smaller woodland perennials.

Maintenance

Japanese Aralia performs best with consistent moisture but can tolerate short dry periods once established. Water thoroughly when the top 1-2 inches of soil becomes dry, typically once weekly during growing season and less in winter. This shade-loving plant prefers filtered sunlight or partial to full shade, as direct sun can scorch its leaves. It thrives in rich, well-draining soil with plenty of organic matter but adapts to average garden soils. Little pruning is required beyond removing damaged branches in spring, though you can trim to control size if needed. Japanese Aralia demonstrates good resistance to most pests and diseases, though it may occasionally face issues with scale insects or root rot in poorly drained soils.
