Introduction

Bear Grass, scientifically known as Nolina texana, is a hardy native perennial valued for its unique, grass-like appearance and adaptability in tough landscapes. It forms dense clumps of narrow, leathery leaves that resemble grass but are actually related to agaves. Growing 1 to 3 feet tall and up to 3–4 feet wide, it remains evergreen year-round. In late spring, it produces tall flower stalks with clusters of small, creamy-white blooms that attract pollinators. Nolina texana is well-suited for drought-prone areas, rock gardens, and bank stabilization due to its fibrous roots that help reduce soil erosion. It is a popular choice for low-maintenance landscapes in Texas and the southwestern U.S.

Maintenance

Nolina texana is very low-maintenance and highly drought-tolerant once established. It thrives in well-drained, rocky or sandy soils and prefers full sun but will tolerate partial shade. Watering is only needed during extended dry periods. Pruning needs are minimal—remove dead leaves as desired to maintain appearance. It is rarely troubled by pests or diseases and does not require fertilization.

For San Antonio Homeowners:

  • Cold-hardy for the region, tolerates winter freezes common in the metro area.
  • Flowers attract native bees and butterflies; dense clumps can provide shelter for small wildlife.
  • Best planted in raised beds or rocky slopes to avoid drainage issues, especially in areas with clay soil.
  • Leaf edges can be rough—consider placement away from walkways or play areas for children and pets.
